4 Design Secrets When Renting Out Your RV
How to design for guests when renovating and decorating a rental camper, RV, trailer or small space
How to Design a Short-Term Rental RV (Or Other Small Space)
Sean and Brianne Walker didn’t initially set out to design their trailer for guests. They made it comfortable and fun for their family of five, but since they’ve branched into the rental business—and acquired three more trailers—they’ve made a few modifications but have kept all of the trailers homey, fun and on trend. Here are some of their tips on designing with guests and short-term renters in mind.
Choose a darker paint.
Instead of everything white—the color they chose for the trailer they use the most—a dark olive green covers the kitchen and entertainment center cabinetry in one of the trailers. “Because the campers will see a lot of wear and tear, a darker color hides more,” Brianne reveals. “It’s still neutral; we want people to feel totally relaxed.”
Keep things neutral.
Regardless of whether your guests will be roughing it in a state park or staying closer to the city, earth tones are more than just a backdrop. “We kept the color palette very neutral so that our customers would feel totally relaxed while camping,” Brianne says.
Take care in the details.
“We wanted to make sure it feels like a retreat on wheels,” she says. So besides a welcome gift (see below), visitors find faux greens, fun artwork and candles.
Keep it stocked.
“We don’t want campers to have to worry about a thing,” Brianne explains, and she hopes the simplicity will encourage more families to camp. The kitchen’s fully stocked with everything for grilling, baking or just opening a bottle of wine. There are extra linens in baskets throughout to encourage guests to cuddle up and read, play a game or gaze at the stars. And there are essentials like marshmallow roasting sticks and outdoor games tucked in cabinets too.
