Easy Weekend Projects for Small Spaces

Pretty, creative small space decorating hacks you have to try

Blogger, designer and author Janet Lee is the master of turning small spaces into amazing rooms. She shares her gems of wisdom in her new book, Decorate This, Not That!, out now from G ARTS, but she gave us a sneak peek before the book hit the shelves. Here are our four favorite ideas from this fun room:

1. Accessorize.
Use small, flat-weave throw rugs (Ikea makes great, inexpensive options) to cover pillows on a neutral sofa. Here’s how: Stack and pin two throw rugs together. Sew three sides by hand using ¼-inch stitches, and leave one short end open. Turn inside out, insert a pillow and stitch closed.

2. Chalk paint is your new BFF.
The sunny yellow-and-white wingback chairs used to be dark green leather, but Janet applied several light coats of watered-down chalk paint (she likes the Annie Sloan brand) for a whole new look.

3. Refashion furniture.
Fashion a no-sew slipcover for a small setee, bench or ottoman from a modern, graphic tablecloth. Attach the fabric on the underside using sheet straps.

4. Choose other furnishings wisely.
Shop the children’s lighting department for smaller-scale chandeliers and pendants that cost 20-30 percent less.
