Flowerly Forecast

What sweeter way to kick off the spring celebration than with a workshop led by landscape pro and TV celebrity Shirley Bovshow on creating “living flower cakes”?

“April showers bring May flowers” sounds logical, but it’s just a saying — nothing on which to hang your hat (or umbrella). So we are not worried about a lack of significant rain in San Diego over the 30 days separating March and May. We know for a fact that Flower Hill Promenade in Del Mar will be “inBloom” from May 6 through May 28.

What sweeter way to kick off the spring celebration than with a workshop led by landscape pro and TV celebrity Shirley Bovshow on creating “living flower cakes”?

A couple hours later, floral designer René Van Rems (a San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles 2013 Star of San Diego) will share tips on making stunning arrangements with what your garden grows (even weeds!). Tickets include wine and cheese, which might entice folks to stick around for his second presentation, from which they will walk away carrying their own floral creation.

Those are just two of numerous activities being hosted at the shopping center. We’re excited about the educational opportunities related to edible gardens, bonsai, planting for butterflies, soil-aiding worms and driftwood succulents.

Literally fashionable are workshops on succulent jewelry and floral headpieces. There also are presentations related to cooking, such as one on using herbs and spices, and making drinks, including cocktails with edible plants and tea blending.

Because inBloom is a family affair, activities include sessions specifically geared toward children, including one in which kids learn how to cut flowers and arrange them in rain boots and others on making flower posies and fairy gardens.

In addition to the above, Flower Hill Promenade will be featuring a custom-built butterfly house (replete with live butterflies); fashion shows; a Hungry Caterpillar story time for youngsters;  themed (e.g., Star Wars) yoga for adults and children, arts and crafts; cheese tasting (and decorating with edible flowers); and a display of playhouses designed and built by local architects and builders, each with its own activities. The playhouses, incidentally, are going to be auctioned off to support local charities selected by the teams that created them.

Because we love community-oriented events like this that encourage people to bring more nature, healthy practices and beauty into their lives, San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles is a proud inBloom sponsor. In addition to the above, the magazine is sponsoring the Friday family movie nights. Like many of the festivities, the movies are free.
