Accentuate the Positive
A guide to home accessories
Accessories are what I consider to be the final layer of a home. The best well-designed interior isn’t complete until you’ve added a few of your favorite things. It’s up to you to decide what and how much you want to bring into your home.
Some of my clients want a clean, minimalist approach. In this case, a few well-placed items are all that is needed. Other people love to surround themselves with cherished objects and collections. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Collections and travel finds: Group them together to create a focal point. If you spread collections throughout the home, they tend to get lost or look a bit cluttered. Combine them on a tabletop, bookcase, display cabinet or wall shelves.
Artwork: Purchasing paintings, sculptures, ceramics or other items at local art festivals is a great way to bring original artwork into your home at reasonable prices.
Photographs: Group photos on top of a piano, bookshelf or console behind the sofa. Use different frames for each photo for the most interesting look. You could have a theme for the frames, such as a touch of gold on each one or a bit of crystal that can visually tie them together. I also like to create a gallery by hanging my favorite photographs of family and friends on hallway walls.
