Plant Perennial Rosettes

Aeonium-Party-Platter3

ADD SMILES TO THE GARDEN with the happy faces of aeoniums. Theses striking succulents with season-spanning rosettes are top sellers at Oasis Water Efficient Gardens in Escondido, manager Carmen Contreras says. Here are six to plant now in spots with sun to partial shade.

‘Voodoo’: Deep burgundy-bronze leaves form foot-wide rosettes on thick stems up to 4 feet tall. Yellow flowers blossom in spring and fall.

‘Sunburst’: Lemon petals striped with green and edged in rosy red make these 6- to 8-inch-wide rosettes pop in the garden. They grow 1 to 2 feet tall.

‘Party Platter’ (pictured above): This new “dinner plate” aeonium with shiny Kelly green leaves stays close to the ground and makes an excellent accent in the landscape or
container garden.

Aeonium nobile: Stout stems hold aloft bold rosettes up to 18 inches wide. Thick triangular leaves are olive green tinged with red-orange. Coppery red flower clusters are more than a foot wide.
Aeonium urbicum: Two-foot-wide rosettes in deep, glossy green are striking, all-season accents. Grows 2 to 3 feet tall on nonbranching stems.

‘Ixtlahaucan’: This compact, low-growing hybrid forms a mound of 3- to 5-inch-wide rosettes with garnet-colored leaves. It makes a reliable landscape plant.
