Accessories: A Few of Our Favorite Things
Accessories are what I consider to be the final “layer” of a home. The best-designed home isn’t complete until you’ve added a few of your favorite things. It’s up to you to decide what and how much you want to bring into your home. Some of my clients want a clean, minimalist approach. In this case, a few well-placed items are all that is needed. Others love to surround themselves with cherished objects and collections. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
-
Group collections and travel finds to create a focal point. When they are spread throughout the home, collections tend to get lost and make rooms look a bit cluttered. Combine them on a tabletop, bookcase, display cabinet or wall shelves.
-
Support local artists. Visit art festivals that are held throughout the year. This is a great way to bring original artwork into your home at reasonable prices.
-
Place photographs together on top of a piano, bookshelves or sofa table. Use different types of frames for each photo for the most interesting look. You could have a common theme for these, such as a touch of gold or a bit of crystal on each frame. I also like to hang my favorite photographs of family and friends on hallway walls.
