Playful and practical intermingle in designs for inventive San Diego kitchens

AS ANYONE WHO ENTERTAINS GUESTS when the big game is on TV knows, a functional and convenient kitchen is a must. Rebecca Flynn’s client was a baseball fan who liked to have friends over to watch games and who wanted a kitchen that worked seamlessly with the adjoining living room and dining areas. Oh, and more storage space, too.
Flynn, of Borrelli Design + Cabinetry, began by updating the kitchen’s dark granite countertop with white Caesarstone, then replacing a beige floor with a more contemporary Spanish porcelain. Pendant lights were installed to define the new countertop as well as the living room and dining area.
If you’re going to entertain fellow sports fans, you’ll need a handy bar and if you want to impress them, you’ll need one that makes a bold statement at the same time. Mission accomplished. Flynn designed a bar that brightly displays glasses and offers generous room for preparation on its surface. A Sub-Zero refrigerator is complemented by an undercounter wine cooler.
In integrating the kitchen with the home’s media cabinet and dining buffet, Flynn utilized both zebra wood veneer and the reddish-brown sapele wood similar to mahogany.
As for her client’s request for more storage space, Flynn conceived a media center to accommodate audio equipment or books. A divider separating the dining room from the living room is also equipped for storage.
“When the design was complete, I felt like the home was what my client and I initially wanted to create,” says Flynn.
It was also what the local National Kitchen and Bath Association wanted to see. Her update won this year’s NKBA Other Room Star Award.
