Gardening for Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds have delighted birdwatchers for centuries. Their bright, iridescent colors, rapid flight and ability to hover are a few of the traits that make them unique. To attract hummingbirds to your garden, plant trees and shrubs for them to perch in and nest and nectar-rich, flowering annuals and perennials. Add hummingbird feeders and a source of water.

Feeders

Hummingbirds are very territorial, so it’s best to hang several feeders and space them apart. Place them in an area that is protected from high wind and predators. Avoid high-traffic areas and areas in all-day sun. Hummingbirds like a nearby tree or bush in which to perch. Clean the feeders regularly and keep them full. Keep ants out of the feeders by adding an ant moat or buy one with a built-in moat.

Water

Hummingbirds do not like deep bowls. Choose a shallow birdbath or use a saucer.
