Garden Planner: By Mary James

WARMER AIR AND SOIL now make May ideal for planting subtropical fruits like bananas, guavas, cherimoyas, kumquats and mangos (pictured). Many need extra warmth, wind protection, water and fertilizer to thrive, even in our mild climate. Good growing guides are available from the San Diego Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers. It's also a good time to add citrus and avocado (if you have room) to the landscape. Check with nursery personnel for varieties best for your part of the county.
